Nehalennia

For the "Light of Nehalennia" Exhibition in Wilnis, The Netherlands, 2017

Nehalennia, is a Celtic goddess of whom more than 160 votive altars are known, all discovered in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Most of the remains of the sculptures show the figure of a young woman, sits on a throne , with a basket full of apples on her lap. Almost always, there is a dog next to her. In some cases, the fruit basket is replaced by something that looks like bread; in other cases, we can see her standing, on the bow of a ship, as "patron saint of sailors".
